Documenting the effects of Texas Senate Bill 17 on the Campus Community
The University of Texas at Austin has a long history of interacting with students from underrepresented backgrounds, from simply university policies to Supreme Court cases. The most recent of these policies is Texas Senate Bill 17, signed into law in June of 2023.
|
Taking effect in January of 2024, SB-17 brought sweeping changes to UT's campus, including the closures of campus centers, removal of student and faculty resources, and even the firing of UT staff members. This project seeks to both document this moment in time, and place it within UT's history of periods of resisting change, or embracing it.

What is Texas Senate Bill 17? |
Authored by Texas Senator Brandon Creighton, and signed into law in June, 2023, SB-17 is a state law that prohibits the University of Texas System from using diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives in its offices, or any units that conduct any functions relating to DEI. The bill includes carve-outs for registered student groups, data collection, academic instruction and research, guest speakers and student recruitment.
